| Trees for Life: In 1990, Taylors of Harrogate made a pledge to plant one million trees around the world. The company is well on the way to achieving its goal with the help of leading environmental charities such as Oxfam, World Vision, The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, and The National Trust. Thanks to the support of millions of Yorkshire Tea drinkers and their families, trees have been planted in tea and coffee producing countries such as Ethiopia, Indonesia, and India, as well as across Britain. Every year, the company donates £100,000 to tree planting and community initiatives. Taylors has always recognized its responsibility to the communities in which it works, and each year, the staff vote for the charity they would like to support for the next 12 months. The Multiple Sclerosis Society, The Starlight Children's Foundation, and local hospitals and hospices are amongst the good causes that have been chosen in the past. The company usually raises approximately £30,000 a year for the nominated charity. In addition to the charity work, Taylors tries to help local primary schools, secondary schools, special schools, colleges and universities by sharing their expertise with the students and arranging trips to the bakery for younger children so that they can see the bakers and confectioners in action, and have a go themselves. And to give helping hand to sport in the region, Taylors have also recently embarked on a sponsorship deal with the Yorkshire Country Cricket Club. Yorkshire Tea is now the Club's official sponsor until the end of the year 2000. Bettys is famous today for its unique combination of traditional Yorkshire and continental specialties and for its excellent teas and coffees. They say that much of their success has been founded on the principle "If we want things done just right, we have to make them ourselves." Customers quite obviously approve of the quality and range and have come up with some memorable quotes over the years: "Yorkshire has plenty of cafes but none as famous as the unmissable Bettys where the cakes and tea breads are the stuff dreams are made from!" My friend and I felt challenged to discover if anything Bettys offered could disappoint − so much so that during a weekend stay in Yorkshire, we ended up eating two or three main meals there. Connoisseurs regard Bettys as being the closest thing to the perfect tea room!" " A visit to Bettys nourishes your Englishness. As you sit and look out of the window, you view life through hanging baskets of red fuchsia, white petunias and blue lobelia and it tints the world so that when you step outside after your cram tea, all the hard sharp edges are blunted and muted for a while, replaced with a sense of harmony, of elegance, of civility, of mellow richness, of old English virtues, that you thought had gone for ever." |
